Focus on Local Talent (April 2006) - Laurie McCabe
A Man of
Many Suggestions: Kevin Stone
It would be fairly easy to make a case for the idea that all
entertainment
is therapy…or that it is therapeutic. Laugh at a comedy act, and tension
and
worries seem to melt away. Get out on the dance floor in front of a
great
band, and body and mind come alive. Shed a few tears at a particularly
heart-
wrenching movie, and somehow you feel renewed. Read a book or newspaper
article with a passionate opinion or message, and a lethargic mind may
ignite
with ideas and determination. Let’s agree that most forms of
entertainment
can have therapeutic effects. But there is one local performer who has
made
a commitment to helping his audience achieve their goals by teaching
them
about the power of their minds.
Sound like a dry “personal growth” seminar that you
give up an entire
Saturday—and the contents of your wallet— to attend? Not on your life!
Meet Murrieta resident, Kevin Stone, board-certified
hypnotherapist by
day, and the “Hollywood Hypnotist” by night. He has found a way to
combine
entertainment and therapy for the enjoyment—and benefit—of everyone.
Growing up in Rhode Island, Kevin was always interested
in the powers of
the mind, but after obtaining a degree in communications, he began a
career
as a radio announcer. His deep interest in hypnosis continued, however,
and
he decided to enroll in the Hypnosis Motivation Institute. Founded in
1968, HMI
is a nationally accredited hypnosis training college located in the San
Fernando
Valley.
Kevin never looked back. He graduated with two degrees
and later
returned for more coursework which earned him the title of
Board-Certified
Hypnotherapist. Soon after, he formed two companies: Mind Growth
Technologies, the clinical side of hypnosis; and Deep Sleep
Entertainment,
which oversees the performance side. That was over eleven years ago, and
his commitment to the practice of hypnosis—which has been in use for
centuries—continues to advance.
That there are these two distinct sides to Kevin’s work
is very important to
him. “One of the reasons I do the stage shows is to educate the public
on the
power of the mind with the application of hypnosis,” states Kevin.
Kevin performs his stage shows across the U.S. He has
appeared at the L.A.
County Fair, Pechanga Casino, Six Flags Magic Mountain, and appears
regularly
at 4th&B, a popular nightclub in San Diego. He has been asked to perform
at
corporate functions for such media giants as Warner Bros. and the Walt
Disney
Co. He was also featured in an on-air segment by 97.1 KLSX radio where
he
hypnotized an all-celebrity guest panel.
One of the components of Kevin’s shows that sets them
apart from those
of almost all other hypnotists is that he involves the entire audience
in the
experience. He states, “I have pioneered this technique that makes for
an
incredible, amazingly different show.” Some of the participants are even
given
a “Mini Hypnotherapy Session” at the end of the show where they can
request
a personalized “suggestion” from Kevin.
Another unique aspect of Kevin’s approximately
ninety-minute event is that
he chooses to showcase hypnosis without the mysticism that we are all so
familiar with from old movies. In addition, he is insistent about not
embarrassing
any of the show’s participants. He strives to make his stage shows bold,
exciting, laughter-filled, memorable events that leave everyone better|
educated—and feeling good about themselves.
Sharing Kevin’s busy life is his wife Yvette, who
handles much of the behind-
the-scenes aspects of Kevin’s work. Not content to stay “behind the
curtain”
all the time, however, you may recognize Yvette from television. The
couple’s
backyard Murrieta wedding was featured on an episode of the Learning
Channel’s A Wedding Story (their segment still airs on occasion,
so keep an
eye out for it!)
A five-year resident of Murrieta, Kevin loves the area.
“I have to say
Murrieta and Temecula are the best places in the world.” He
acknowledges,
however, what we all know so well… “It is getting a little crowded! I
have
to travel to my Beverly Hills clinic to see patients four times a week.
The
commuting takes a lot of time.”
